General Information
South Sumatra Province covers an area of 87.017 km2. It is bordered Jambi Province on the north, Lampung Province on the south, Bengkulu Province on the west and Bangka Strait on the east. Palembang, the capital of this province used to be known as the site of Sriwijaya, a great Kingdom that ruled over and united maritime smaller kingdoms of Indonesian Archipelago in the seventh to the thirteenth century. This great kingdom played an important role in the Southeast Asia:
it left it's traces in old China and Formose and Madagascar in the eastern coast of Africa.
Nine big rivers run in this province : they are means of transportation for people living in the area. The nine rivers callled Musi, Ogan, Komering, Lematang, Kelingi Rawas, Lalan and Batanghari Leko have tens branches to travel and beautiful sceneries to enjoy.
Mountains Dempo (3159 m) and Seminung (1954 m) are located along the Bukit Barisan Mountain Range of the western border of the province. Ranau Lake with an area 128 km2 offers beautiful and natural views. It's an ideal palce for water-skiing, diving and swimming.
Mountainous, hilly and swampy areas cover the province: virgin forests and woods can be found here. The whole provincial area is located 900 to 1200 metres above the sea level. Fertile highlands and water sources are still natural and good for palnting coffee trees, tea, palms, vegetables and fruits.
Several ethnic groups such as Palembang, Ogan, Komeringm, Semendo, Besemah, Gumay, Lintang, Ranau and Kisam coexist peacefullly in South Sumatra. Marriage to outsidera is common and inter-ethnic marriage do occur. Their unique culture can be found in a wedding ceremony. Although, each tribe has its own culture and traditons, they also share ome common socio cultural activities.
The majority of the South Sumatra population is muslims. The influence of Islamic culture strongly affects their life and daily activities. They celebrate Idul Fitri (the feast after the Ramadhan fasting moth), Idul Adha (the feast when muslims all over the world celebrate the tenth of Pilgrimage month in Mecca), Isra' Mi'raj (Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad), Maulid Nabi (Birth of the Prophet Muhammad), Nuzulul Qur'an ( Revealation of Qur'an). owever, inter-faith harmony and mutual understanding of believers of different reliigions prevail. Social interactions among these believers are not hindered: the concept of nationalsm and one state-one nation is dominant.
In general, South Sumatra respect visitors. They are very much influnced by modern lifestyles. They are friendly to the visitors and open to inovation.
